Tanzania President Samia’s Husband Diesfeat

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on September 7, 2026, while undergoing treatment in Zanzibar.

Ameir, a former agricultural officer and academic, died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar City, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart-related illness.

The death was announced by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who expressed condolences to the President and her family.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said.

Funeral preparations are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where arrangements for his burial are being made.

Ameir and President Samia married in 1978 and largely kept their family life away from public attention.

The couple had four children, three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, later entered public service in Zanzibar.

Ameir spent much of his professional life working in agriculture and academia before his retirement.

He became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in March 2021 when Samia became President following the death of John Magufuli.

Unlike his wife, who had spent decades in public service, Ameir maintained a low public profile and rarely featured at official events.

His death leaves President Samia and her family mourning as relatives, friends and government officials prepare for his burial in Zanzibar.
