IBANDA: The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has launched a UGX2.5 billion water supply stabilisation project aimed at ending years of water shortages and rationing in Ibanda Municipality and surrounding communities.
The project, which is fully funded by NWSC, involves laying a 19-kilometre DN250mm (10-inch) transmission main from the Break Pressure Tank at Kara Village in Mukazi Anyara to Ibanda Municipality.
According to NWSC, the project is expected to be completed within three to four months and will increase water production in the area to approximately 2,500 cubic metres per day.
The intervention is expected to improve the reliability of water services, reduce rationing and provide residents with more consistent access to safe water.
Speaking during the launch, NWSC Senior Director of Operations, Eng. Edmond, called on district leaders, stakeholders and residents to support the project to ensure it is delivered successfully.
He urged the contractor to adhere to the agreed timelines and appealed to water users to pay their bills promptly, saying timely payments enable NWSC to continue investing in and expanding water infrastructure.
Ibanda Municipality Mayor said inadequate water supply has left a significant proportion of residents dependent on unsafe sources.
“About 75% of the people of Ibanda consume unsafe water because of inadequate supply. I commit to supporting National Water throughout the implementation of this project so that our people can finally benefit,” the Mayor said.
Ibanda District LCV Chairperson, Betty, described the project as a source of renewed hope for residents who have endured unreliable water supply for years.
“Today we are seeing hope. Thank you, NWSC, for remembering us. We have suffered without reliable water for a long time, and we are happy that this project has finally begun,” she said.
The District Woman Member of Parliament and the Resident District Commissioner also pledged their support for the project and called on the community to protect the new infrastructure from vandalism.
NWSC said the project is part of its efforts to strengthen water infrastructure and ensure safe, reliable and sustainable water services across the country.
The corporation appealed to Ibanda leaders and residents to work closely with the contractor and NWSC teams to ensure the project is completed on schedule and delivers lasting relief to the community.
