FDC founding member and businessman Garuga Musinguzi dead
KAMPALA: Prominent businessman and philanthropist James Garuga Musinguzi has died at a hospital in Kampala
Sources close to the family said Garuga, in his 70s, passed on from a Kampala hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Garuga, a respected figure in Uganda’s business and political circles, was originally from Kanungu District, where he maintained strong ties throughout his life.
He rose to national prominence through a string of successful ventures in agriculture, real estate, and transport, and was also known for investing in community development initiatives in southwestern Uganda.
Beyond business, Garuga was widely admired for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in supporting schools, health centres, and youth empowerment programs in rural areas.
He helped establish education foundations in Kanungu and regularly funded scholarships for underprivileged students.
Politically, Garuga was among the early supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and remained a vocal advocate for multiparty democracy in Uganda during its formative years.
Though he stepped back from active politics in later years, he remained an influential voice in opposition circles.
