KAMPALA: The Uganda Chapter of Young Water Professionals (YWP), led by the president, Ms Evelyne Mukajusi, took part in the 5th edition of “Running for Climate,” a national event aimed at raising awareness on environmental protection and the importance of tree planting.

Held at the National Council of Sports Hockey Grounds in Lugogo and organised by Tree Adoption Uganda, the event attracted individuals and organisations dedicated to addressing climate change through community engagement. Under the theme “Our Environment, Our Future,” the run featured 10 km, 5 km, and 1 km race categories.

Notably excellence includes Maureen Komakechi who won the 10 km race, while Herbert Asiku and young Yvone Tendo emerged top in the 5 km and 1 km categories respectively. The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) – YWP team were also among the most notable contributors, both in participation and performance.

Ezekiel Musama and Eric Obema secured second place in the 10 km and 5 km races, respectively. Others, including Ben Okurut and Praise Ashaba (Luweero), Onesmus Akatwijuka (Nakawa), and Osbert Ayebazibwe (Matugga), ranked within the top ten in their respective categories.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Stuart Maniraguha, Ag. Executive Director of the National Forestry Authority, commended utilities and corporate entities for their role in environmental conservation. He specifically recognised NWSC and YWPs for their consistent support of national reforestation efforts, but warned against the continued degradation of forest reserves, linking unchecked tree cutting to erratic climate patterns, property damage, and reduced agricultural productivity.

He then encouraged every citizen to take part in tree planting efforts ahead of National Tree Planting Day, urging, “Let’s protect the environment; let’s go and plant trees.”

Ms. Mukajusi, in her remarks, called for environmental responsibility in day-to-day life, highlighting the effects of pollution on water treatment processes and encouraged participants to adopt sustainable practices such as proper waste disposal, reduced polythene use, and protection of water sources.

The event concluded with a symbolic tree planting exercise, underlining the shared commitment to environmental stewardship
