KAMPALA: Construction of the Busega–Mpigi Expressway is expected to progress after the Uganda Police Force and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) agreed to relocate their affected facilities next week, even as compensation disputes remain unresolved.

The agreement followed an on-site meeting involving the Minister of State for Works, Siraj Ali, Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba and NWSC representatives to discuss relocation and compensation challenges affecting the road project.

The two institutions agreed to move their facilities while awaiting compensation, a step expected to ease implementation of the project.

“The Uganda Police Force and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation have agreed to relocate their affected facilities next week while awaiting compensation,” officials said following the meeting.

The discussions focused on resolving challenges involving public infrastructure affected by the project, with the government seeking to prevent relocation and compensation issues from unnecessarily delaying construction.

During the visit, the minister also met Kyobe Kizito, a project-affected person in Lungala, Mpigi District, whose compensation case remains before court.

“The compensation matter for Kyobe Kizito in Lungala, Mpigi District, remains before court,” officials said.

The case remains an outstanding issue, with its resolution dependent on the ongoing legal process.

The Busega–Mpigi Expressway is intended to improve connectivity between Kampala and Mpigi, ease traffic congestion and enhance transport along the Kampala–Masaka corridor.

The relocation agreement addresses some of the practical challenges affecting the project, but outstanding compensation matters will still require resolution through the relevant legal and administrative processes.
