MASINDI, UGANDA — A convicted inmate at Masindi Government Prison was killed on Aug. 3, 2025, after a fight with another prisoner, authorities confirmed.
Moses Tuhame, who was serving a sentence for aggravated defilement, was attacked in the early morning hours by Anatoli Irumba, a remand inmate awaiting trial for the murder of his mother.
Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said the incident occurred around 4 a.m. in the prison’s TB isolation ward, where both men were being held.
“The victim sustained injuries and was rushed to Masindi Hospital, where he unfortunately passed on a few hours later,” Mayanja said.
Police have taken over the investigation, and a postmortem will be conducted before Tuhame’s body is released to his family. The Prisons Service is cooperating with law enforcement.
The deadly altercation has renewed concerns about inmate safety, particularly regarding the segregation of prisoners with varying security risks. The Ugandan prison system has faced criticism for overcrowding, understaffing, and poor protocols, which authorities say can contribute to violence behind bars.
Officials expect the police investigation to shed light on what led to the attack and if any lapses in supervision contributed to the death. The findings may also guide future measures to improve inmate safety.
