Key suspect arrested in Sydney Gongodyo mob killing investigation

KAMPALA,UGANDA; Police have arrested a key suspect in connection with the alleged mob killing of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, who died following an incident on June 5, 2026.

The suspect, identified as Mugwiisa Obed, was captured in video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the attack. Investigators say that during interrogation, Mugwiisa led detectives to a local laundry (dobbi) where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the incident. The garment was recovered and has been secured as evidence in the ongoing investigations.

Police also arrested Owino Joseph, a security guard, over his alleged involvement in the incident.

The arrest was made on Tuesday, the same day family, friends, teammates and hundreds of His arrest brings the number of suspects in custody in connection with Gongodyo’s killing to nine.

Earlier, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala announced the arrest of five additional suspects, bringing the total in custody at the time to eight.

Those already under arrest are:

  • Roden Ayebazibwe
  • Juliet Namukose
  • Elly Mondoni
  • Herbert Twinomujuni
  • Perigrino Katsigazi
  • Darlious Tayebwa
  • Hannington Tugume

The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects currently in custody to ten as investigators intensify efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding Gongodyo’s death and identify all individuals who participated in the attack.

Authorities say investigations are still ongoing, with security agencies actively tracing and pursuing other suspects believed to have been involved in the mob action.

Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all those responsible for the killing are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
