NWSC accelerates Hoima water projects ahead of AFCON qualifiers

HOIMA; The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has intensified efforts to strengthen water supply in Hoima as the city prepares to host major sporting events, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

A team from NWSC’s Planning and Capital Development (P&CD) Division, led by the Director of Infrastructure Planning and Development, Eng. Denis Taremwa, conducted a field assessment of water sources and infrastructure in Hoima to assess their capacity to meet rising demand.

The team inspected the Kyarwiru Borehole, which produces 15 cubic metres of water per hour, and the Mparo Borehole, with a production capacity of 25 cubic metres per hour.

The two boreholes feed the 162-cubic-metre Kyamwiru Reservoir, which supplies Hoima City Stadium, Kicwamba and Bwikya wards and surrounding areas.

The officials also inspected the Kyarwabuyamba Water Treatment Plant, also known as Hoima 1, whose production capacity has been expanded from 3,000 cubic metres to 6,000 cubic metres per day.

NWSC is also implementing the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, known as Hoima 2, to address the city’s water supply gap and increase capacity ahead of the AFCON qualifiers.

The project includes the construction of an intake at Kabaale on River Rafu, a 300-cubic-metre-per-day water treatment plant at Rwoga, a 300-cubic-metre reservoir at Musaijamukuru and a distribution main to Kabaleega International Airport in Hoima District.

It also provides for raw and treated water pumping mains and an expanded distribution network serving Hoima City.

During the field visit, NWSC officials held their monthly progress meeting with the contractor, ZhongHao Overseas Construction Company, led by Mr Wang, to review the project’s implementation, pending procurements, proposed modifications and observations from the construction site.

Mr Taremwa commended the contractor for the progress made but urged the team to maximise available working days, particularly during the rainy season, to accelerate construction.

He said the NWSC Board of Directors is expected to visit the project site in a fortnight and urged the contractor to update project documentation and resolve outstanding issues ahead of the inspection.

The contractor reported that the project is currently 28 per cent complete, with cumulative progress expected to reach about 40 per cent by the next monthly meeting on October 29, 2026.

The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in March 2027.

NWSC said the investments are aimed at strengthening Hoima’s water infrastructure, meeting the needs of the growing Hoima urban population and supporting the city’s preparations to host major sporting events.
