NWSC Backs KCCA in Citywide Faecal Sludge Management Efforts
KAMAPALA: Kampala City’s sanitation efforts have received a major lift following the delivery of three new cesspool trucks under Package 5B of the city’s ongoing sanitation infrastructure upgrade. The trucks, procured by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), are an attempt to aid the Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) efforts to enhance efficient faecal sludge management across the city.
During a stakeholder meeting chaired by Assistant Resident Engineer Gloria, and characterized by representatives from NWSC, the project consultant Fichtner, the contractor Hebei Construction Co. Ltd., and KCCA, held on July 2nd, 2025, at the Nalukolongo Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (NFSTP), NWSC officially allocated the trucks to their respective operational units.
According to the allocations, one truck was assigned to NWSC’s Sewerage Services Directorate (SSD) to support sewer-related operations within the city, whereas the remaining two trucks were handed over to KCCA to enhance faecal sludge collection and transportation in high-density areas of Kampala where access challenges and sanitation service gaps persist.
Although the key handover ceremony to KCCA was conducted during the meeting, witnessed by Eng. Geoffrey Kasirikale (Project Manager, NWSC), Tumwine Philip (Plant Manager, NFSTP), and other officials, KCCA did not take immediate possession of the trucks. The actual pickup occurred yesterday, July 9th, 2025, under the supervision of Plant Engineer Ankunda Arnold.
The addition of these trucks is expected to ease pressure on Kampala’s limited fleet and improve response times, especially in underserved communities. As the city grapples with rapid urban growth and the complex demands of waste management, targeted investments like these are essential for sustaining a cleaner, healthier Kampala.
