Court sets strict bail rules, fixes Shumuk fraud case for July 15

KAMPALA,UGANDA; The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has directed businessman Mukesh Shukla, proprietor of Shumuk Aluminium Industries, to conclude his long-running criminal trial without further delays.

Chief Magistrate Christine Nantege issued the stern warning during proceedings in which Shukla appeared after a prolonged absence.

Shukla faces charges of obtaining more than Shs220 million through false pretences and conspiracy to defraud. He is jointly charged with his company, manager Judith Ayebare, and accountant Kadikar Dharamdip Anilkumar. The allegations stem from claims that between November 2020 and November 2021, the accused fraudulently obtained approximately USD 27,950 and more than Shs116 million from complainant Shahid Mahmood Alvi of Alvi Auto Village Ltd.

The money was allegedly secured by falsely claiming to lease or rent two plots of land in Banda Industrial Area and Nakawa Industrial Area.
During the day’s session, the court arrested Shukla upon his appearance and detained him for about three hours before proceeding.

The magistrate cancelled previous sureties and ordered fresh ones. Shukla’s wife and son stood as guarantors, assuring the court of his future attendance.
Chief Magistrate Nantege emphasised the need to bring the matter to a close and fixed July 15, 2026, as the final date for continuation of the hearing, directing that cross-examination must be completed on that day.

The case dates back some years ago. Shukla was previously remanded to Luzira Prison after arrest from his Nakawa office.

He had sought bail, citing his status as a family man with fixed residence and community ties, and expressed willingness to reconcile with the complainant while offering Shs20 million as a gesture of good faith.

The proceedings have now been placed on a strict timeline to ensure resolution.

Shukla remains on bail under the new conditions set by the court.
