KAMPALA: The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Legal Team recently took part in the official launch of the Muslim Arbitration and Mediation Centre Uganda (MAMC-U), a forum that introduced fresh possibilities for culturally grounded dispute resolution in the country.
Held at Hotel Africana under the theme “Justice that Heals, Pioneering New Solutions in Dispute Resolution in Africa,” the event opened a new chapter in how Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is approached on the continent, and drew attention to a growing shift toward integrating religious and cultural principles into modern legal frameworks, with the goal of making justice more accessible, restorative, and socially responsive.
Organised in partnership with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Arbitration Centre (OIC-AC), the forum brought together legal experts, scholars, and stakeholders from across Uganda and beyond. Conversations focused on advancing amicable settlements, strengthening cross-border commercial dispute resolution among OIC member states, and building Shari’ah-compliant systems that promote fairness while honouring cultural identity.
According to NWSC’s Legal Team, represented by Principal Legal Officer Brownie Ebal, Legal Officer Emmanuel Bongomin, and Afuwa Nalubwama, the engagement offered valuable insights into evolving ADR models that can be tailored to better serve Uganda’s diverse communities. They explored how culturally aligned mediation and arbitration approaches can encourage reconciliation, restore trust, and provide dignified alternatives to traditional litigation.
NWSC is committed to strengthening its customer-focused legal strategy by embracing inclusive and culturally responsive frameworks, and this has been clearly depicted by this experience. So, as the corporation continues to interact with a broad customer base, the lessons from the MAMC-U launch present an opportunity to enhance service delivery, reduce litigation timelines, and support Uganda’s wider push for accessible, relationship-based justice.
