NWSC: Kanungu Water Project Reaches 33% as 25km of Pipes Laid

KANUNGU: The construction of the Kanungu Water Supply Improvement Project has reached 33 percent, with about 25 kilometres of the planned 40-kilometre water network already laid.

The project is being implemented by the Government through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to improve access to safe and reliable water in Kihihi and surrounding communities in Kanungu District.

The project is expected to increase water production by at least two million litres per day while strengthening water transmission, storage and distribution in the area.

Construction started on February 27, 2026, and is scheduled to run for 18 months, followed by a 12-month defects liability period.

Pipework is currently driving much of the progress, with works on the network standing at about 50 percent.

Among the completed works is a break pressure tank along the Katete-Kihihi transmission line, while concrete works at the Matanda spring source are ongoing.

Power extensions to both the Matanda and Mpangango spring sources have also been completed.

However, the contractor has been advised to commence and accelerate works at the Mpangango spring source to keep the project on schedule.

The project has several major components, including the Matanda-Kihihi water supply system, where a new spring source with a capacity of at least one million litres per day is being developed.

The Matanda component will also include a pump station, approximately 13.3 kilometres of pumping main and a 200,000-litre elevated reservoir.

Under the Mpangango/Katete-Kihihi component, the existing source will be upgraded from one million to two million litres per day.

The works will also include a pump station, about 5.5 kilometres of pumping main and 12.6 kilometres of gravity main.

Another 7.2 kilometres of gravity pipeline will be constructed under the Kihanda component, alongside associated infrastructure.

Distribution improvements are also planned in Butogota, Kihanda and selected sections of the existing network.

Once completed, the project is expected to provide a more reliable supply of clean water to households, schools, health facilities, businesses and tourism establishments in Kanungu.

The investment is also expected to reduce communities’ dependence on unsafe water sources, improving hygiene and helping to prevent waterborne diseases.

Improved water supply is further expected to support local businesses, tourism and other economic activities while reducing the burden on households that currently spend significant time and resources looking for safe water.
