Mbale water project nears handover as works hit 97% – NWSC

MBALE; The Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation Project has entered its final stage ahead of testing, commissioning and handover after reaching 97% physical completion, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced.

The progress brings the government-funded project closer to being handed over for operation, with most of its major components already complete.

The latest status was established during a two-day monitoring mission and monthly progress review involving the project consultant, contractor and NWSC project and area teams.

The teams inspected key installations, including the Namatala–Bungokho pipeline, Musola Reservoir, Bungokho Water Treatment Plant and Manafwa Water Treatment Plant as they assessed readiness for the final stages of the project.

Several components have already reached full completion, including the sewerage network serving Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), sewer rehabilitation works, Busoba Reservoir, public sanitation facilities and distribution lines.

The Namatala Water Treatment Plant is 98% complete, while the Manafwa Water Treatment Plant stands at 93.3%.

With the project now at 97%, the remaining works are largely limited to finishing, testing and closing outstanding snags before handover.

At the Manafwa Water Treatment Plant, the outstanding works include pipe and pump testing, water-tightness tests and minor finishing works.

Project stakeholders agreed to undertake a joint inspection as the next key step before the final handover of the completed facilities.

The project is expected to strengthen access to safe water and sanitation services in Mbale and surrounding towns once it is commissioned and handed over for operation.
