NRM’s Idah Nabayiga Declared Kalangala District Woman MP

KALANGALA; The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has regained the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat after its candidate, Idah Nabayiga, defeated the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) in a by-election overshadowed by allegations of ballot stuffing and voter intimidation.

Returning Officer Ronald Agaba declared Nabayiga the winner after the completion of vote counting and tallying, saying the exercise was conducted in accordance with Uganda’s electoral laws and procedures.

Official results released by the Electoral Commission showed Nabayiga securing 12,642 votes, ahead of NUP’s Irene Nampaala, who garnered 7,474 votes.

Independent candidates Sharifah Babirye, Hellen Flavia Nagawa and Agnes Nasuuna polled 244, 217 and 34 votes respectively.

The Electoral Commission said 20,611 valid votes were cast, alongside 427 rejected ballots and 67 spoiled ballots.

“The Returning Officer for Kalangala District, Ronald Agaba, declared the results following the completion of polling, vote counting and tallying in accordance with the electoral laws and procedures,” the Commission said in a statement, congratulating the winner and thanking voters, candidates, election officials, security agencies, observers, the media and other stakeholders for participating in the exercise.

The by-election was held following the death of Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who died on April 19, 2026, at Alexandria Medical Centre in Kampala due to complications arising from an elective surgical procedure.

The 40-year-old NUP legislator, who had recently been re-elected to the 12th Parliament, was widely known for advocating improved services and infrastructure for the district’s island communities.

“The Electoral Commission congratulates the successful candidate and appreciates the voters, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, observers, the media and all stakeholders who participated in the electoral process,” the Commission said.

Nabayiga Idah’s election adds to the National Resistance Movement’s representation in Parliament and marks another milestone in Kalangala District’s political leadership.

The Electoral Commission has consistently called for peaceful participation and adherence to electoral procedures, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder cooperation in ensuring free, fair and credible electoral processes across the country.
