Uganda and Zambia utilities partner to build stronger water sector leadership

Nkana Water and Sanitation Company (NWSC-Z), in partnership with Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), is hosting a four-day hybrid operations training from June 17th to 20th, 2025. The initiative is part of the EU-funded Water Operators’ Partnerships (WOP) project titled Strengthening Equitable Water and Sanitation Services Provision in Nkana Water (SEWATSAN)”, and is implemented by NWSC–Uganda under the oversight of GWOPA and UN-Habitat.

The training opened with sessions for Directors and Senior Managers, focusing on transformative leadership and strategic utility management, as discussions explored the role of leadership in organizational transformation, managing non-revenue water, revenue optimization, mentoring, and upholding integrity in utility operations.

The remaining sessions target middle managers, team leaders, and supervisors, equipping them with practical skills to enhance operational efficiency. Key areas include managing commercial losses, strengthening customer engagement, improving revenue collection, and applying effective supervisory techniques such as coaching and change management. Participants are also being encouraged to champion accountability and anti-corruption practices across all levels.

Facilitated by experts from NWSC–Uganda, GIZ, and NWSC–Zambia, the sessions provide a rich platform for regional collaboration and knowledge exchange.

This training fuels efforts to strengthen performance-driven leadership and operational resilience in Africa’s water sector, ensuring better service delivery and a more responsive utility structure.
